Welcome to the first edition of Presidio Computer's Newsletter.
Vol 1. No. 1
Today, I received 2 infected email messages. One, from RIkoondeb, entitled "How are you"; the other from the postmaster of an email server, informing me that "spice girls vocal concert" was undeliverable.
I haven't sent a message about the spice girls to anyone.
My NAV did not detect the infection. But my suspicions were high, so I went to www.pandasoftware.com . There, I used their free online scan service. This confirmed my suspicion, that the messages were infected, and identified the infection as the KLEZ.I (I as in Indiana) worm.
Lessons:
A. No anti virus software will catch every virus.
Some people wonder if the presence of 2 anti-virus programs
is a good idea. In theory, if one program (ex: norton)
doesn't detect a virus, the other (ex: mcafee) will detect the virus.
This is a situation where theory and reality are vastly
different.
Please do not have 2 anti-virus programs installed on your
computer. They will fight, like tykes in a sand box.
They will lock up your PC!!!!!!!
The best virus protection steps:
1. Install anti-virus software
2. Scan your system regularly (I suggest daily).
3. Obtain updates regularly (I suggest weekly).
4. Scan all documents and programs before you install any
program.
5. Don't run an ".exe" or ".vbs" program
if you are unsure what the program does.
6. If you don't know what a program does, search the
Internet. At www.yahoo.com in the search area,
type in (this time WITH quotes) "Iloveyou.vbs". ( I love you).vbs without spaces. Click on search. Check out
the results. It can be that easy.
8. Turn off "preview pane" if you use Outlook
Express (OE). Enter the "inbox". Left click on "view" in
the upper left. From the drop down menu, left click
"layout". If the box adjacent to "show preview pane" has a
check mark, left click on the box. That will remove the check mark.
B. If your suspicions are high, use one of the free online scanning utilities available.
You can find them at: www.pandasoftware.com , http://housecall.antivirus.com , and www.norton.com/avcenter .
If you want your name removed from this mailing list, please let me know. Your name is not kept in an address book. Your name is neither shared with nor sold to anyone.
